We’ve got some big news coming your way! Starting next month, Debut members will be able to use their Debut Mastercard™ to hop on public transport in Auckland—no need for a separate transport card! This exciting update is part of the National Ticketing Solution (NTS) rolling out regionally across New Zealand over the next two years.

What does this mean for you? 🛂

With the new system, you’ll be able to tap your physical Debut Mastercard™ to tag on when boarding public transport, or, if you prefer, simply use your phone with Apple Pay or Google Pay. No more fumbling for a bus card or worrying about top-ups—public transport will now be as easy as tapping to pay.

Rolling out Open Loop Transit Fares in New Zealand 🚌

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has set plans in motion to launch Motu Move, a modernised National Ticketing Solution that’s years in the making. This system is on its way to transforming how Kiwi travel by enabling contactless payments, making it easier than ever to get around.

Auckland is leading the charge, with new contactless pay machines already being installed at transport hubs, ready to support the launch in November 2024. Open loop payments have been in testing for the past two years, and once fully live, they will run alongside the AT HOP card system until the national rollout of Motu Move is complete in 2026.

What to expect in Canterbury and beyond 🚏

Christchurch will also see open loop payments introduced on its airport bus in December 2024. The wider Canterbury region, including Timaru, will join the movement starting in March 2025. Though official dates for Wellington and Christchurch haven’t been announced, we anticipate open loop payments will arrive by mid-late 2025, with the rest of New Zealand following suit in 2026.

During the transition period, some services may temporarily continue to support existing passes like AT HOP or Snapper as well as open loop payments. This overlap will ensure a smooth transition for those who use special fare discounts, such as children, students or seniors. Eventually, Motu Move will replace these local cards entirely.

What is open loop transit? 💳

Open loop transit is a game-changer, allowing passengers to pay for public transport trips using contactless debit or credit cards or mobile payment apps like Apple Pay or Google Pay. This method eliminates the need for a separate transit card and brings unparalleled convenience for both locals and tourists alike. Since it operates on an open network, it’s easy to use anywhere without worrying about topping up specific transport cards.

Key Rollout Dates: 🗓️

  • November 2024: Auckland introduces adult fares on open loop, running alongside AT HOP.
  • December 2024: Motu Move pilot launches with the Airport Bus in Christchurch.
  • March 2025: Motu Move launches in Timaru.
  • Mid-Late 2025: Wellington and Christchurch are expected to follow.
  • 2026: Nationwide rollout of Motu Move, with Auckland switching fully to the new system.

Are we there yet? 🚍

With Motu Move and open loop transit fares making their way across Aotearoa, we’re buzzing with excitement. Systems like these are already a hit in cities around the world, and soon, we’ll join them. Whether you’re commuting to work or sightseeing as a tourist, you’ll be able to pay for your journey with your debit or credit card—no need to buy a separate bus card or ticket.

Debut members, get ready! From later this year, you’ll be able to tag onto public transport using your Debut card or mobile wallet. For more details, check out Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency for the latest updates.
